A Forest of Record Size

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is the largest forest in the lower 48 states and encompasses approximately 5.6 million acres in Nevada and almost 700,000 in California, for a total of 6.3 million acres.
A Landscape of Extremes

Spread across seven ranger districts, forest landscapes vary from towering snow-capped peaks to wide-open sage steppes. Elevation ranges from a low of 4,100 feet to a high of 12,374 feet.
Recreation and Shared Stewardship

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest manages the largest minerals programs and one of the largest livestock grazing programs in the national forest system. Outdoor recreation opportunities range from downhill skiing to wilderness hiking to off-roading and help to support the state’s tourism economy. More than 80 percent of Nevada lands are publicly managed, and the Forest Service manages about 8 percent of that amount. Federal and state agencies, local communities, and Tribes work together in “Shared Stewardship” to manage these lands to protect Nevada’s economy, environment and way of life.
Introducing Silver Belle

Silver Belle was harvested on October 24, 2025, from Mt. Rose in the Carson Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. She was 48 years old at time of harvest.
The Perfect "People's Tree"

Silver Belle is a red fir, species name Abies magnifica. She stands 53 feet tall, is 20 feet,1 inch in diameter and has a 16-foot canopy spread. She boasts an almost perfectly uniform crown, distinctive blue-green needles that point upwards and dense, sturdy branching, perfect for hanging ornaments. This is the first time that a red fir has been selected.
A Name Rooted in Heritage

The name “Silver Belle” celebrates Nevada, “the Silver State,” and the rich western heritage. This year's "People's Tree" is relatively small but mighty, having grown up in some of the harshest and coldest climates of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
