Fuel-Efficient PACCAR MX-13 Engine Earns Growing Kenworth Customer Allegiance
The 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13 engine continues to achieve growing adoption by customers in their new Kenworth Class 8 trucks.

"Kenworth customers continue to choose the fuel-efficient and reliable, proprietary PACCAR MX-13 engine at a growing rate for their Kenworth Class 8 truck purchases," said Preston Feight, Kenworth assistant general manager for sales and marketing. "Customers appreciate the engine's fuel efficiency, higher horsepower and torque ratings, excellent reliability, and quiet operation."
According to Feight, the PACCAR MX-13 offers a fuel economy improvement of up to 3.5 percent*, which may amount to about a $2,500 annual fuel savings for the typical long-haul truck averaging 120,000 miles per year. This year, the PACCAR MX-13's top ratings were increased to 500 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque.
The PACCAR MX-13 utilizes the latest common rail, fuel-delivery technology, which enables injection pressures of up to 36,000 PSI, or 2,500 bar, and significantly enhances fuel efficiency and performance. The common rail fuel system uses controls to regulate the fuel in a central manifold, only compressing the amount of fuel mixture needed. The result is finer fuel atomization and more ways to optimize combustion, ensuring the lowest possible fuel consumption, emission and noise levels.
The engine also is designed to an industry-leading B10 life, which means an estimated 90 percent of PACCAR MX-13 engines will go beyond 1 million miles in life before an engine rebuild is required. A pair of early, customer 2010 PACCAR MX engines - each with nearly 550,000 miles - was closely examined earlier this year. The wear patterns appeared similar to that of a newly broken-in engine with very little soot and very clean rings and grooves, while all other components from camshafts to the liner flange looked like new parts.
The PACCAR MX-13 was recognized when it teamed with the Kenworth T680 to earn the 2013 Heavy Duty Commercial Truck of the Year award from the American Truck Dealers (ATD). The PACCAR MX-13 engine is domestically produced at the state-of-the-art PACCAR Engine assembly plant in Columbus, Miss.
"We feel that Kenworth and the PACCAR MX-13 will continue to be the truck make and engine of choice for those fleet and truck operators who desire a fuel-efficient, reliable 12.9-liter engine in their Class 8 trucks," said Feight.
Available in Kenworth Class 8 models, including the T660, T680, T700, T800, T880 and W900, the PACCAR MX-13 engine offers a wide range of horsepower and torque ratings to meet customer power requirements for hauling applications that range from lightweight to more than 100,000 lbs.
