Kenworth Showcases T880S Mixer with ISL G Near Zero Engine at ACT Expo
Kenworth is showcasing a new T880S mixer – its first truck equipped with the Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero emissions engine – in partnership with CalPortland and McNeilus at this week’s Alternative Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Long Beach, California.
The special Kenworth T880S mixer with set-forward front axle is a pilot truck produced with input from CalPortland and McNeilus. Its debut comes in advance of this month’s start of CalPortland’s initial roll-out of its order of T880S mixers equipped with the ISL G Near Zero engine. Delivery will continue throughout 2017.
“The Kenworth T880S with the ISL G Near Zero emissions engine offers excellent payload capacity, and maneuverability, due to its optimized set-forward axle layout, as well as reduced emissions from the engine,” said Steve Mitchell, vice president of asset services for CalPortland in Glendora, California. “We look forward to adding these T880S units into our California fleet operations this year.” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently recognized CalPortland with a 2017 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award for the company’s continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency achievements.
McNeilus® partnered with Kenworth to provide its 10-1/2 yard Bridgemaster® Transit mixer body and the company’s NGEN™ twin vertical compressed natural gas (CNG) system – which offers customers an enhanced high capacity, low profile back-of-cab configuration – for the T880S mixer displayed in Kenworth’s ACT Expo booth (No. 1019).
Also on display in the booth is a Kenworth T680 with a Cummins Westport ISX12 G natural gas engine operated by Matheson Postal Services, a division of Matheson Trucking in Sacramento.
Both the aerodynamically efficient Kenworth T680 on-highway tractor and T880 vocational workhorse are now available for order with the Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero NOx emissions natural gas engine.
Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero Emissions Engine
Emissions from the ISL G Near Zero natural gas engine are 90 percent lower than the current NOx limit of 0.2 gram per brake horsepower-hour, and meet the 2017 EPA greenhouse gas emission reduction requirements. The new engine achieves this reduction through the introduction of advanced engine calibration, a unique maintenance-free, three-way catalyst after-treatment system, and a closed crankcase ventilation system.
“The Kenworth T680 and T880 with the Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero emissions engine are especially suited for vocational, regional haul, and refuse fleets interested in reducing their environmental impact and operating costs,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director.
The 8.9-liter Cummins Westport ISL G Near Zero is available in ratings up to 320 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The engine can operate on 100 percent natural gas, which can be carried on the vehicle in either compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) form. The new ISL G Near Zero is also compatible with renewable natural gas (RNG) which allows for even further reductions in GHG emissions.
